Getting Prescribed

Do I still need a prescription for CBD in New Zealand?

As you can not yet access CBD oil off the shelf, you will need a doctor’s prescription to use this medicine. This ensures patients are getting quality and accurate guidance in the use of CBD oil for medical treatment. CBD oil can also interact with certain other medications so it’s important you consult your GP so it can be safely used.

Doctors, especially in New Zealand are more open to alternative therapies than you may think, so step one is to open the conversation with your doctor. Your doctor may or may not be clued up on cannabis use for medical treatment so do your research as there are alternative medical doctors that will be willing to help you with your request. At the end of the day, you’re asking your doctor to prescribe a medicine that they are liable for. If you feel that your request hasn’t been properly considered, you can certainly get a second opinion from another GP.

Another option is to consult with a cannabis specialist clinic. They are located throughout New Zealand, and with a quick google search you should be able to find one that can guide you along the way to finding the right medicine for your needs. Many of them do online consultations as well.

For a lot of New Zealanders, getting a cannabis or CBD oil prescription can feel daunting. But with the right knowledge and education, you should feel a lot more empowered to speak with your doctor and get a supportive response.
