One of New Zealand’s most adored Actors, Sam Neill has recently vocalised his opinion to “get sensible and finally legalise marijuana”. He’s encouraging Kiwis everywhere to get out and vote in this vital election. But it’s going to take more than a few social shares to get everyone in the community to the polls.

With less than a week left before the voting deadline, many feel the result hinges on youth turnout in the voting polls. Currently the race is pretty neck and neck but some are feeling discouraged it may not pass. Speculative polls are always very uncertain and can sometimes be a very poor predictor.

What we do know for certain, is that the conversation is happening. More and more people are talking to family and friends about voting yes and stressing the importance registering and making sure to vote.

At The Cannalist, we believe New Zealand has the opportunity to clean this industry up, get the laws right, control the substance and regulate consumption – not to mention boost the economy and produce more jobs. The Bill has been designed to reduce harm and improve access to healthcare and education around the soft-drug use. Let’s take the drug out of the hands of gangs and into the hands of the IRD.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern still has not publicly stated how she’ll vote. However she has stated her position to support the End of Life Choice Bill, which is the other big controversial referendum facing public vote.

All New Zealanders have a clear choice. It’s time for cannabis to come out of the dark places and into the light. We’ve always been known as a “progressive nation” so either way you choose to go, make sure you get out there and place your vote. Progressive New Zealand is in your hands.
